The Cherry Orchard (Campbell Theatre, Martinez)
We usher in our fifth season by returning to our roots. The Hapgood's mission has always been focused first and foremost on producing the great works of modern drama, and our first production features the work of two of theatre's heaviest hitters. David Mamet is a veritable living legend. Equally acclaimed for his work in theatre and film, Mr. Mamet has been nominated for multiple Tony and Oscar Awards, in addition to having won a Pulitzer Prize. Anton Chekhov is a name uttered in the same breath as Euripedes, Shakespeare, Moliere and Ibsen, and with good reason. Though he was a doctor by trade and his life was cut tragically short, he left the world with four of the most exquisite representations of humankind ever written for the stage. Our first production of the 2011-12 season marries the work of these two brilliant men in Mamet's adaptation of Chekhov's final, and perhaps greatest work, The Cherry Orchard.
